ECO SCHOOLS USA WATER PATHWAY

Join the National Wildlife Federation’s Eco-Schools USA staff to learn more about the Eco-Schools USA program and their Sustainable Water pathway.  Participate in an interactive discussion to develop suggestions for a shared green roof facility and determine ideas for water related programming. What should students be learning?  What types of activities inspire understanding and action? This workshop will include both large and small group work.  Come help shape the direction of an important community project. Led by Liz Soper, Assoc. Dir., Eco Schools USA

CLIMATE IMPACTS ON CORAL REEFS

This workshop will focus on the effects of climate change on coral reefs. Find out more about why our warming atmosphere due to excess CO2, forces both direct temperature and pH changes on oceans, and subsequently on coral reef habitats.   Previous investigations in the US Virgin Islands by the USGS, NOAA, and others will provide baseline information for our inquiry.   Come find out what a student field study program will investigate this summer in the US VI. Led by Zach Smith, Director, The Last Environment

THE WAVE PROJECT: A STUDENT-RUN INTIATIVE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE

Are you concerned about the state of the ocean? Do you want to join with students across the city to implement meaningful environmental change? Are you interested in kick starting an ocean conservation group of your own, but are unsure where to start or what steps to take? Come to the Boston Latin School’s Wave workshop! Learn more about pressing ocean issues from a student perspective, and get tips on how to inspire and educate others about the ocean and its importance in our everyday lives. Discover how to promote and share your love of the ocean with others through science, experimentation, conservation, and community effort in our engaging and interactive workshop! Led by BLS Wave Leadership Team

GETTING THE WORD OUT WITH CLIMATE CHANGE MODELS

Learn to use the model/simulator designed by Professor John Sterman and his graduate students.  This model is Secretary of State John Kerry's favorite tool when arguing for reduction of green house gasses.  Sterman’s group has developed climate simulators to help policymakers, business leaders, the media and the public learn about the dynamics of climate change and the consequences of the choices we must make. MAKE THIS MODEL YOUR OWN!  http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2011/communicating-climate-change-1027.html  Led by Travis Franck, MIT, PhD one of the designers of the model.

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE: SHAPING THE FUTURE FOR BOTTLED BEVERAGES

How do we reduce the one-way throw-away pipeline of single-serve bottles? What policy tools affect how we consume water and other beverages? Learn about the “Expanded Bottle Bill” that is being debated in the Massachusetts legislature. Find out about policies to limit bottled water being implemented in national parks, in colleges, by municipal governments. Learn what you can do to have an impact. If we want beverage companies to “own” their bottles from beginning to end, how do we get there? What is the pathway to a zero waste future?? Led by Acton-Boxborough

Resource Force and Jill Apel, Concord Ban the Bottle Campaign

SUB/URBAN GREEN JUSTICE

For too long the Environmental Movement has been separated from the Social Justice Movement.  Join Sub/Urban Justice for an interactive workshop connecting these topics, framed around our youth-led diesel pollution reduction campaign.  Learn about the issues, how to get involved, and how to launch your own campaign.  Led by Chris Messinger, Pema Doma, Elizabeth Nguyen

FUNDRAISING FOR SIGNIFICAN STUDENT-LED SUSTAINABILITY PROJECTS

Come find out how to raise serious money for your serious youth-led sustainability projects.  Want to bring water bottle filling stations to your school, or fund a rain catchment and drip irrigation system for your school garden.  This workshop will provide a variety of ways to generate money to fund your great ideas and projects.  Led by Sophie Purdom, Brown University

IMPROV JONES:  FILMING A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT   *** DOUBLE SESSION***

Led by members of a local improv troupe, workshop participants will be given a video camera, a prop, and support in filming a 2-minute public service announcement (PSA) about water and sustainability.  Find out how to get your message across on film!  This is a double workshop session.  Please plan on attending this workshop for both workshop sessions.  Led by Theater Teacher and Improv Jones member, Joe Gels and Educator Dustin Brownell

GREEN ARCITECTS & ARTISTS: DESIGNING A ROOFTOP TEACHING SPACE FOCUSED ON WORLD WATER ISSUES  *** DOUBLE SESSION***

Buildings are responsible for 50% of total US energy consumption and 75% of US electricity consumption. Radical changes are needed in building design and urban planning in order to respond to the crisis of climate change and to address students’ needs to be educated for sustainability. Italian schools influenced by Reggio Emilia are acclaimed for their stunning environments that dazzle our senses, invite curiosity and discovery, and foster strong respectful relationships, provoking us to recognize the instructive power of an environment.  Local architects, museum staff and artists will engage workshop participants in a design charrette aimed at developing conceptual designs for an outdoor rooftop classroom focusing on world water issues and in suggesting some of the large-scale art and sculpture that might inspire the project’s rooftop visitors.  Led by Gail Sullivan, Principal at Studio G Architects, Michelle Grohe, Director of School and Teacher Programs, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

MAKE YOUR DREAM GREEN PROJECT A REALITY

Do you have awesome ideas for how to green your school? Maybe you want to ban plastic water bottles or put in water bottle filling stations? Do you dream big but aren't sure how to turn those dreams into a reality? Come to this workshop with ACE to learn how to take your big ideas and put them into a plan that will help you make the change you want to see in the world. Led by Brian Stillwell and Rouwenna Lamm, Alliance for Climate Education, ACE

Session Two – 12:00 P.M. – 12:45 P.M.
