Committees

Energy

The Energy Committee is made up of students addressing concerns about amount of energy being used by students, their families, their school, and their community.  Students in the Energy Committee are rolling out a compact fluorescent light bulb drive and fundraiser starting March 6.  Students on the committee are also exploring the possibilities of greening our own building (have already been in touch with the Mayor’s Energy Commission) and the possible use of photo voltaic power at BLS

Activism

The Activism Committee is already circulating a petition to auto makers asking for support of energy efficient automobiles.  Feel free to download a copy of the petition blank for your own use.  The students on the Activism Committee have also written numerous letters to local and state representatives exploring green policies and legislation in Massachusetts.  Take a look at our Action Alert Page for legislation that we support, or download one of our sample letters and send it yourself!  Also check out our link to find your local and state representatives.

Recycling

The Recycling Committee aims to increase recycling efforts. The committee has already made a huge impact on recycling efforts during the lunch at Boston Latin School.  Plans are underway to sponsor a competition between the lunches to increase the recycling efficiency; the group also is exploring ways to lower the waste output at BLS.

Public Service Announcement

The Public Service Announcement Committee, is currently sponsoring a contest to submit the best idea for a two-minute movie about global warming and the winner will win $100 and get to see their idea turned into a real movie!  Entry forms can be found in Room 025. Entries will be able to be submitted from 2/12 - 3/15.  The contest is open to all BLS students.

Communications and Partnerships

The Communications and Partnerships Committee, is working on a number of Youth CAN partnerships.  Youth CAN is already partnering with MIT through the Technology and Culture Forum. We are also working alongside Natures-Partners (www.natures-partners.org), and are actively seeking to collaborate with Harvard’s Graduate School of Education as well as others for the Youth Summit. The committee is working on a Youth CAN brochure, and a weekly update on Youth CAN activities and a Global Warming FACT of the WEEK that is being aired once a week on BLS TV’s morning announcements program.

Youth Summit

The Youth Summit Committee, is planning a Youth Summit on Global Warming to be held May 19th at MIT.  The Youth Summit is for area youth groups and school groups interested in the topic of global warming. Help publicize this important event by circulating the group’s Youth Summit Flyer.  The Boston Herald in Education Series will profile the Youth Summit in their upcoming (April 9-13) science education series “Global Warming – Local Solutions.”

Events

The Events Committee, is already organizing a Youth CAN presence at spring environmental events like Climate Rescue Day, Earth Day, Wake up the Earth, Boston Shines, and Step It Up 2007 (Step It Up is a nation-wide day of demonstrations on April 14, 2007, designed to raise awareness about global warming.)

We are currently making many changes to both our site and organization, please check back later for more information about this committee.
